In March the sandhill cranes come through the San Luis Valley by the thousand, and their calling over the stubble fields is the first honest sign that Del Norte's season is turning. Grasshoppers Landscaping & Lawn Service starts then — cleanups, the first mow, the sprinklers brought back to life for a valley where water is counted carefully. Summer is mowing, edging, trimming and feeding under a sky so wide that the shadows of the clouds cross whole fields at a time. Then the cold comes down hard and clear off the Rio Grande, and the same trucks turn to plowing driveways, shoveling walks and sanding the icy corners. Two seasons, one set of hands, and a valley that is beautiful in both of them.
