Out past the last streetlight in Moffat County the roads run gravel and straight, and a night of wind will lay a drift across one like a wall. The Road & Bridge Department is the county crew that goes out to meet that — plow trucks moving before daylight so the school routes, the ranch turnoffs and the long county roads are open when people need them. Blowing snow undoes an hour's work in minutes some mornings, and the answer is simply to come back around and do it again. Sanding the grades and the icy corners is part of it too, quiet work that most drivers never think about, which is the sign it went right. When the county roads are passable, the whole winter here holds together.
