Late August in Montezuma County belongs to the monsoon: the sky builds all afternoon over McElmo Canyon, then delivers rain, hail, and one mean straight-line gust in about eleven minutes. H & S Tree Care spends the days after cutting hangers out of cottonwoods, lifting broken limbs off sheds and fence lines, and hauling the brush before the sun bakes it into place. The rest of the season is the quieter half of the job — trimming crowns so wind moves through instead of shoving, pruning weak forks out before the weather finds them, removing the trees too far gone to keep. It is sweaty, unglamorous, deeply satisfying work, and the measure of it is a crown that gives with a gust instead of fighting it. By evening the canyon rims go copper, the air smells like wet dust, and the yard is quiet again.
