The number in the name is an elevation, and up here at 5,280 feet the cold arrives dry and sudden and Commerce City wakes to it in the dark. 5280 Maintenance, Inc. is already out by then — headlights swinging across a lot off Vasquez Boulevard, blade down, the first pass laid clean and straight. Snow at this altitude squeaks underfoot and drifts light, then packs to glass wherever tires have crossed it, so the job is timing as much as muscle: plow, shovel the walks, put ice melt where the shade will hold all day. By the time the sun clears the eastern plains the pavement is dark and wet and somebody's morning is simply easy. That is the entire point of a snow route done all the way through.
