Green Again

About Green Again

In June the elms over the Patty Jewett streets throw long shade by seven in the evening, and the whole neighborhood smells of cut grass and wet sidewalk. Green Again mows that ground — the deep, narrow yards of the old north end and the strips between walk and curb that nobody notices until they are done right. Grass at six thousand feet lives on what you give it and the sun does the rest, so cutting height matters, the pattern matters, and the trim line along the fence matters most of all. Clippings off the concrete, gate latched, a lawn that looks like somebody was paying attention. That is the whole ambition, repeated weekly from thaw to frost.
