Morning arrives first along the High Line Canal, where the cottonwoods drop the light through in coins and the old water path bends its slow way across Cherry Hills Village. Azteca Grounds keeps the lawns on the wide acre lots that spread beneath those trees, mowing and edging and trimming while the air is still cool enough to work in. There is a plain kind of pride in one straight pass across a big Colorado lawn — the edge crisp against the drive, the clippings gathered and gone before the heat comes up off the pavement. Thin high-plains air pulls the moisture out of everything, so the care runs deeper than the cut: aeration, overseeding, feeding, weeds pulled back at the border. Come September the turf still holds its color, and the mountains stand quiet to the west the way they always have.
