Snow does its heaviest work here in March, when a wet Front Range storm backs up against the hills and unloads overnight on a town that spent the day before thinking about spring. Richis Tree Service, LLC is moving in it long before the alarm clocks — plow lights swinging along Smoky Hill Road, a scrape and a push and then the next drive. Driveways get taken down to bare concrete, walks get shoveled to the doorstep, and the shaded north side of a house gets ice melt because that is where the slick spot hides until noon. There is a particular hush to four in the morning under falling snow, one truck and one blade and a whole street still asleep. The measure of the night is simple: at seven the cars back out, and nobody is late.
