Watch the Wet Mountains at dusk in December and you can see it coming: the range goes soft, then grey, then gone, and twenty minutes later the snow is over Cañon City. Avalanche Excavating works the hours that follow, when the town is inside and the streets belong to plow lights. The valley's winters are famously forgiving, but the storms that do land arrive fast and want dealing with the same night. Drives are opened, lots are pushed back to their true edges, walks are cleared and salted so nobody has to guess where the curb is. There's something worth being proud of in a driveway that's black and bare at dawn while the yard beside it is still white.
