October in Castle Pines arrives as wind, a warm dry chinook running down off the mountains, stripping the gambel oak and pushing leaves into every corner of a yard. Crsprinkler works that turn of the season: last mows cut a little lower, beds cleared, drifted leaves hauled off before the first heavy snow presses them flat into the turf. It is unglamorous work, and it decides what a lawn looks like the following May. The routes wander Castle Pines and over toward Castle Rock and Lone Tree, yard by yard, until the grass has gone dormant and gold. Then the mowers get put up and the ridge goes quiet.
