Weather in this stretch of the Colorado River valley usually announces itself down De Beque Canyon and along I-70, giving about an hour's warning before the mesa gets its turn. Sand and ice melt go on the north sides and on the grades where a car has to start uphill. Open pavement before the commute is the whole objective, and it is a satisfying one.
