Thirty-some miles northeast of Alamosa the dunes pile up against the mountains, and a good share of the traffic through town is people headed out to walk on them. Great Escapes keeps the ordinary ground in order so the escaping is easy: mowing, trimming, seasonal cleanups and yard upkeep through the growing months, plowing and shoveling once the year turns. Winter here is bright and bone-dry more often than it is stormy, but when snow does come it comes with wind, so drives and walks get opened and then kept open. Summer asks the opposite, steady attention and a mower run often enough that the grass never gets away. Either way the aim is the same: a place that looks cared for whether you are coming home or heading out for the weekend.
