Dawn on this stretch of the plains arrives flat and enormous, the sun lifting off the far edge of the county and lighting everything at once. A meadowlark starts up on a fencepost, and the mowing starts with it — cutting, trimming around posts and buildings, edging drives and walks, keeping grass from creeping where it should not. Around Akron the land is honest about what it is: shortgrass, wind, sky, and whatever you decide to keep green. What you get for the effort is small and real — clean lines, a tidy verge, a place that looks tended in country that mostly is not. By the time the heat comes up at ten, the work is already behind you.
