Yucaipa takes its name from a Serrano word for green valley, and Sod Man Landscaping spends its days making the case. A bare lot up in Chapman Heights, graded and raked smooth, becomes lawn in a single afternoon — seams knitted tight, corners cut to the walkway, the whole field watered until it goes dark. Late spring is the sweet stretch of the year for it here: warm days, cool nights sliding down off the mountain, roots taking hold before June leans in. After the sod goes down comes the long patient half of the job — mowing, edging, feeding, keeping weeds out of a lawn too young to fight them. Come back a year later and there is no telling where the seams ever were.
