On the old blocks of First and College Street, where Woodland's tall Victorian houses sit back behind deep front lawns, the grass has a lot of history to answer to. Pacific Stone Landscapes works those yards the way they ask to be worked: mowed even, edged clean along the sidewalk, trimmed close at the porch steps and the iron fence posts. Beneath valley oaks older than most of the houses, shade and root make their own rules, and the mowing pattern bends around them. Spring is the season for it — the rains let go, the turf comes up thick, and a whole street reads green from the corner. A tidy strip of lawn in front of a century-old porch is a small thing that makes a block look looked-after.
