Up in the hillside cul-de-sacs on the south side of West Covina the yards come in odd shapes — slopes, terraces, narrow strips of lawn that have to be coaxed rather than bulldozed. Jamescapes takes that kind of ground on: mowing to the contour, edging where grass meets stone or walk, trimming shrubs so the view down the valley stays open. October light up there is long and amber and forgiving, and a lawn cut in it looks like something composed on purpose. The work is patient and mostly unglamorous, and then you stand at the top of the drive and see it whole. That is the part worth showing up for.
