On winter mornings at Volta, the sky over the wetlands fills with the calls of geese and ducks lifting off the ponds of the Volta Wildlife Area into a pink, misty dawn. This is a tiny place on the west side of Merced County, all flat fields, irrigation ditches and wide open sky. Alan's landscaping keeps yards neat out here, mowing lawns, trimming shrubs and tidying up once the winter storms ease. Grass grows slowly but steadily in the cool damp, and a little attention keeps it from going ragged before spring. A trimmed yard beneath those great skeins of birds shows how good a small, kept place can look inside a very big landscape.
