The Experienced Gardener

About The Experienced Gardener

Downtown Visalia keeps its gardens close — the little plots along Garden Street, the roses that go on blooming past Thanksgiving in a valley that rarely freezes hard. The Experienced Gardener works at that scale and with that patience: mowing and edging the lawn, then pruning roses and shrubs by hand, weeding beds on hands and knees, and clearing out each season's spent growth so the next one has room. Hand work catches things a machine goes right over, which is why the beds around a house like this stay legible year after year. Autumn is the long, gentle season here, and it is a fine time to walk a yard slowly and decide what needs cutting back. The finished picture is a place that looks cared for rather than merely cut.
