North Vallejo wakes up under the marine layer — grey and cool and soft-edged until about ten, when the sun finally burns a hole in it and the whole valley toward American Canyon opens up green or gold depending on the month. Villa's Landscape starts in that grey hour, when the grass is still damp and cuts cleanly. Mowing, edging, string trimming, weeding out beds and gravel, shaping hedges back off the walkways, and bagging up the cuttings so nothing is left behind but the smell of cut grass. By the time the fog lifts, a row of yards along the street has quietly gotten its shape back. Straight lines, clean corners, nothing dragging over the sidewalk — that is what they leave behind.
