Late in the day the wind comes up through the Carquinez Strait, and on the bluffs at Glen Cove it bends the grass flat and carries the smell of salt water uphill into the yards. Tiburcio Landscape works those slopes and the flatter blocks below them, where a lawn has to hold its own against wind, thin soil and a long dry summer. The work is plain and it is done well: mowing, edging, cutting back shrubs before they swallow a window, clearing weeds out of the gravel and rock, keeping beds tidy and the borders sharp. When the lights of the Benicia bridge come on across the water and the last row is finished, the yard looks settled — like someone has been paying attention to it. That is the result they are after.
