Some evenings the fog comes up the Conejo Grade from the Oxnard plain and pours into the valley like water finding a bowl. Conejo Valley Tree Services works before it arrives, trimming sycamores along Conejo Creek and pruning crowns back off eaves and windows on the Newbury Park side. The pruning aims to keep a tree's own shape rather than to make it small, which is the difference between a yard that looks tended and a yard that looks cut. Removals are planned foot by foot in places where the fence stands four feet from the trunk. And when a Santa Ana snaps a limb across a driveway, storm damage cleanup means it is gone, along with every twig it brought down with it.
