Herman's Helpers

About Herman's Helpers

Midsummer smells like cut grass and warm gravel, and the day's heat sits over the yards well before noon. Herman's Helpers works the yards on the route — mowing, string trimming the posts and foundations, edging the walk, clearing the clippings off concrete already too hot to kneel on. Where a lawn is framed by open ground on two or three sides, the mowed boundary is the thing that tells you where the yard begins. Heat waves flatten the grass and one good week of rain makes up for a dry month, and the schedule bends toward whichever is happening. Cleanups bracket the season on both ends, opening it in spring and closing it after the last leaf.
