Veteran Lawn

About Veteran Lawn

On a still Sunday morning a sailplane will slip off the strip at the edge of town and go up on the mountain air without a sound, and for a while the loudest thing in Tehachapi is a meadowlark. Veteran Lawn works into that quiet — mowing in straight passes, edging where the turf meets concrete, trimming the corners a mower cannot reach, then clearing the yard down to bare, tidy ground. Grass at this elevation gets pushed around by hot afternoons and cold nights, so cutting it right matters more than cutting it often. The measure of a good visit is a lawn that looks intentional from the sidewalk: clean stripes, a firm edge, no clippings left on the walk. Then the mower shuts off and the morning goes back to the birds.
