April is when Tehachapi finally lets go of winter — lupine along the roadcuts, the grass on the hills briefly, gloriously green, and the big trees around Central Park putting out leaves like they have somewhere to be. Nick's Gardening spends that season in the beds: pulling weeds out of damp ground while they still come up easy, setting in new plants, spreading mulch, shaping what wintered over, and keeping the lawn mowed and trimmed around all of it. Gardening at this elevation means working with a short, generous window and knowing not to waste it. A bed that has been weeded, edged and mulched in spring reads as intention rather than accident. That is the result worth chasing, and it lasts all the way to the dry months.
