In the winter of 1960 the world's Nordic skiers raced through the woods at Tahoma, where the Olympic cross-country and biathlon courses wound through the forest near McKinney Creek. Most summers now those same woods hear little more than a woodpecker and the creek running down to the lake. Tillery Snow Removal, whose name speaks to the cold months, tends Tahoma lawns in the warm ones: mowing grass to an even height, trimming the edges and keeping a cabin's yard neat between the firs. As August evenings cool and the light filters green-gold through the branches, a tidy lawn has the bright, ready look of a starting line. Tillery wants every yard it leaves to look exactly that way, clean, crisp and set for whatever comes next.
