Dig anywhere in Al Tahoe and you find the story of this basin fast: decomposed granite, coarse and pale, a foot down or less. Earth & Stone Landscapes builds with that fact instead of against it — stone set where stone belongs, planting beds shaped to hold soil through the melt, lawns mowed and edged clean against the borders. Midday sun at six thousand feet is fierce and honest; it shows every crooked line and every good one. A boulder placed so it looks like it has always been there is a small triumph nobody photographs, and it lasts for decades. That is the pleasure of the trade here — leaving ground that looks less like a project and more like a piece of the Sierra that finally got looked after.
