When the winter rain finally comes to North County, the hillsides above San Elijo Lagoon go green almost overnight and the whole valley smells of wet sage. Grounded Landscape Architecture designs for that rhythm, building gardens in Solana Beach that expect a long dry season and welcome the short wet one: planting plans drawn to the slope, beds shaped so water soaks in instead of running off, lawn areas sized to what a household will actually use. Installation follows the drawing, then maintenance keeps it honest, mowing, edging, cutting back and thinning as the plantings fill in. Soil here is light and quick to drain, so mulch and steady irrigation do quiet, essential work. Two winters on, a garden like that stops looking planted and starts looking native to its own hill.
