When a January storm comes over the Santa Cruz Mountains it arrives all at once — rain sideways, wind moving through the redwoods on the Bonny Doon side, and by morning there are limbs down across driveways from Empire Grade to the flats. Bears Tree Services works the aftermath and the prevention both: crown thinning, deadwood taken out of coast live oaks, clearance cut back off roofs and lines, removals when a tree is finished, stumps ground down to soil again. Summer is the season for shaping, when the canopy is full and you can read exactly what should come off. Chips go back down as mulch, rounds get stacked, and the ground is raked clean before the truck pulls out. A yard should look like nothing happened at all, except that more light gets in.
