About PJ and Sons Gardening

June in Santa Barbara arrives grey — mornings the color of the inside of a shell, the sun withheld until noon. That is when PJ and Sons Gardening is already out along the quiet blocks of San Roque and Samarkand, the mower running before the day has decided what it wants to be. Lawn cutting, edging, trimming around beds and mailboxes, the yard raked and cleared: the sort of round that makes a street feel looked after without anyone quite noticing why. By the time the overcast breaks and the light goes bright and flat, the grass sits at one even height and the walks are swept bare. Somebody comes home at five to a yard that simply looks right.
