For two or three weeks in late spring the older streets of Santa Ana go purple, jacaranda blossoms coming down faster than anyone can sweep them, sticking to the walkway and to the mower deck. Ancira Landscaping works straight through it — mowing, edging, raking the petals off the turf before they mat and yellow the grass underneath. Beneath those canopies the lawns run thin and shaded, so the cutting height comes up and the visits come closer together. It is fussy work in bloom season and plain honest work the rest of the year: hedges shaped, beds weeded, trimmings hauled off. The reward is a lawn that looks deliberate under a tree with other plans.
