For a few weeks in late winter, the hills around San Miguel turn an implausible green — rain-fed velvet across the oak savanna, gone gold again by June. Grow Green chases that color the rest of the year. Keeping a lawn alive through a North County summer takes real method: mowing tall so the roots stay cool, feeding on schedule, watering deep and early before the heat climbs. The reward comes in August, when the grasslands have long since browned and a kept lawn is the greenest thing between the river and the ridgeline. It is a small defiance of the season, and it never stops being satisfying.
