Rhiza Gardens

About Rhiza Gardens

Rhiza is the Greek word for root, and roots are where every San Marino garden begins — down in the deep alluvial soil the San Gabriel foothills have been shedding for ages. Rhiza Gardens works from the ground up: soil opened and amended, plantings chosen for the long dry summers, lawns renovated so they draw from below instead of merely surviving on the surface. Spring is the busy stretch, when beds get turned and the whole city seems to bloom at once. But the real test is July, when a garden built on good roots holds its green while shortcuts fade. Feed the ground, and the garden follows — that is the entire philosophy.
