The bungalow blocks of Broadmoor were laid out with a ruler, and a lawn in front of one looks best cut with the same idea in mind. We set the blade height on purpose, run the passes straight, edge the walk to a crisp line and blow the concrete clean so the whole thing reads sharp from the sidewalk. Feeding, weed control, aeration and overseeding follow the calendar this climate actually keeps — push growth through the wet winter and spring, ease back through the dry half of the year. Fall means leaves, and leaves mean showing up with tarps until the last one is gone. A rectangle of grass, done right, is a genuinely good-looking thing.
