Every afternoon the wind turns and comes in off the Bay past the San Leandro Marina, and the lawns all over town lean a little with it. That is the hour we like for the last pass — mower cooling, a clean edge cut along the walk, clippings swept off the concrete before the light goes amber over the shoreline. We keep grass fed and watered on a schedule that respects a dry summer and a wet winter, because that is the rhythm this town actually keeps. Weeds come out before they set seed, and compacted ground gets opened up so the November rain has somewhere to go. It is ordinary work, and it makes a yard look like somebody loves it.
