Before San Jose was streets it was oaks and orchards, and the survivors are still out there in the yards — a valley oak mid-block, wider than the house beside it. Golden Oaks Tree Services prunes and trims those old trees and the ones that came after, working from the Guadalupe River east toward the Mt. Hamilton foothills. Summer is long and dry and an oak asks for very little; the discipline is knowing how little to cut. Crowns get cleared of deadwood, lifted off the roofs, and balanced so the first heavy rains do not find a weak point. When they find one anyway, storm cleanup is a full day of cutting and hauling, and the lawn comes back out from under it.
