About SFGUF (San Francisco's Gardens and Urban Farms)

San Francisco grows more in its backyards than most people would guess — beans up a fence, a lemon in a five-gallon pot, and a small stripe of lawn in the middle of it all. SFGUF (San Francisco's Gardens and Urban Farms) tends those mixed yards on the flats near Potrero del Sol, mowing the grass and keeping its edges honest against the beds. A lawn beside a growing plot has to be cut clean so nothing creeps where it is not wanted. Spring runs long and mild in this pocket of the city, and the mowing carries right through it with fruit trees flowering over the fence line. The finished yard is part garden, part green floor, and it looks cared for from the kitchen window.
