There is a lawn at the Presidio's Main Post wide enough to hold a parade, and that broad, level green is the standard this outfit carries around in its head. Main Parade Lawn mows and maintains grass on the city's northern edge, where the wind comes straight through the Golden Gate and brings the salt with it. Cutting happens in the calm of early morning, when the cypress are still dripping and Crissy Field is quiet except for the gulls. Holding one even height across an open lawn is harder than it looks — a single wandering line and the whole field tells on you. Done right, the yard reads as one clean sheet of green all the way to the fence.
