About 831 Gardening

Three digits, one valley: 831 is the number this whole stretch of farm country answers to, and 831 Gardening keeps its lawns in order. Mornings begin under a gray ceiling that pushes inland off Monterey Bay and settles over the valley floor, so the first mow of the day is cut through cool damp air. By ten the ceiling lifts, the floor of the valley opens out flat and bright, and the grass dries into clean stripes. The round covers mowing, edging, string trimming, hedge work and green-waste cleanup, front yards and back. It is ordinary work done exactly, and a street looks different when every strip along the sidewalk runs true.
