The Santa Ana runs below Redlands mostly as a wide bed of stone and willow, and then a January storm comes off the mountains and it remembers that it is a river. Rodriguez Landscaping works through those weeks the way it works through all of them — mowing when the grass asks for it, trimming and edging, cutting shrubs back, pulling storm debris out of the beds, resetting sprinklers that took a hit. Winter here is short and green, and a lawn tended straight through it comes into spring already ahead. There is good quiet in the work on a cool clear morning after rain, the mountains suddenly white and close enough to count the canyons. Then the mower starts and the day begins.
