On a June Saturday the marine layer lies over the valley until ten or so, then slides back and leaves the San Gabriel ridgeline standing there sharp as a paper cutout. Vallarta brothers work the front half of that morning while the air is still soft: mowing, edging, string trimming, shaping hedges, sweeping everything down at the end. Around Red Hill the streets bend with the old slope, so no two lawns share a shape and not one of them cuts in a tidy straight line. Getting a crisp border on a yard that curves is a small craft, learned by doing it a few thousand times, and it is the part worth being proud of. By afternoon the driveways are clear, the clippings are gone, and the whole block reads as looked after.
