Mornings in Pittsburg start low and grey against the Los Medanos hills, and on winter days the tule fog sits in the swales until the sun over Mount Diablo burns a hole through it. Mowers off the trailer, a first cut with the dew still on the blades, borders trimmed back to a straight honest line before the day turns warm on the Kirker Pass side of town. By June those hills go gold and dry, and a watered, well-kept lawn becomes the one green thing on the street — worth the early start, worth the careful pass around every sprinkler head. The crew handles the mowing, the trimming, the hauled-away clippings and the shaping of beds, and leaves a yard that looks settled rather than fussed over.
