At the southern tip of Santa Cruz County, the Pajaro River slides out to Monterey Bay beside Pajaro Dunes, pooling into a lagoon where pelicans and egrets work the shallows and the strawberry fields of the Pajaro Valley spread green behind. Winter brings Pacific storms that push the surf high up the beach and drench the sandy ground; spring answers with sunshine and a fresh flush of growth that wants shaping. Late in the day, as the sun drops toward the water and the dune grass glows, a well-tended yard frames the view instead of crowding it. Making a house by the sea look that settled is good work.
