Onyx lies at the quiet east end of the Kern River Valley, where the South Fork of the Kern meanders through cottonwood and willow and Highway 178 heads off toward Walker Pass and the desert beyond. This is where the southern Sierra meets the Mojave, and a yard has to make peace with both: scorching summers, chilly nights, and wind that knows its way down the valley. Onyx Landscaping carries the town's own name and shapes lawns and landscapes that sit easy in this sun-bleached, wide-open country. In November, when the cottonwoods along the river flare pure gold against the dark granite hills, a tended yard becomes part of the same picture. The work belongs to this one valley, and it shows.
