Fog finds Occidental on most summer evenings, slipping over the coastal hills into this small redwood town in western Sonoma County where the Bohemian Highway curls past. Dutch Bill Creek runs through town on its way to the Russian River, and the whole place feels shaped by water: dripping redwood boughs, sword ferns, moss on the north side of every trunk. THE WATER'S EDGE DESIGN/LANDSCAPE LLC designs and builds landscapes in that shaded world, where a garden has to work with deep shade, rich forest duff, and wet coastal winters. The aim is a garden that lets the forest in rather than fighting it, so it seems to have grown straight out of the hillside. Step outside on a misty morning and it all belongs.
