Late in summer the thunderheads pile up over Mount San Jacinto and drift toward the canyons on the north side of Moreno Valley, and Pigeon Pass Road smells like dust waiting on rain. Green canyon landscape keeps to the mornings on those days, mowing, edging, string trimming and clearing the concrete before the heat and the sky both build. Weeds are pulled from beds and from gravel alike, since out toward Hidden Springs the two blur into each other. Clippings and trimmings go into the truck rather than the far corner of the yard. A canyon-side lot kept trim reads as a piece of the hillside instead of a fight with it.
