Late in the day the light over Monterey Park arrives sideways from the west, spilling in over El Sereno, and every front lawn on the slope turns the color of a struck match. El Wester likes that hour for finishing: the last pass of the mower, fence lines run through with the trimmer, hedges squared before the shadows get long. Through the dry months the work is mostly patience — cutting high, keeping the weeds out of the beds, sweeping the walk so the grass line reads sharp against the concrete. After the first winter storms it turns into a race, and that is the good kind of trouble to have. Roll past at dusk and the yard simply looks calm, which is the whole point.
