Out past the north edge of Merced the road runs toward Lake Yosemite, and by May everything along it is growing at full tilt. Yard max works the town's growing season like a sprint that lasts eight months — mowing, edging, hedge trimming, and cleanups that keep yards from being overtaken by their own ambition. Saturday mornings here smell like cut grass in every direction, and being the reason for some of that is its own reward. The valley sun is relentless but democratic; it grows the weeds and the bermuda alike, so the difference between yards is simply the care they get. Maxed-out green, kept in line — that is the job, and it shows from the street.
