Up at the north end, in El Porto, the yards are small and salt-scoured and the sky overhead belongs to the planes climbing out over the water. J Goldman Landscaping works that pocket of Manhattan Beach where the streets dead-end at the dunes and everything grows a little tougher for it. Mowing here means keeping the turf at a height that shrugs off wind burn; edging means holding a clean line where grass meets the sand that's always trying to move in. Weeds get pulled, hedges get cut back off the walkway, sprinklers get checked for the salt-clogged head that quietly starves a corner. Late in the day the breeze goes offshore, the noise lifts, and the little green squares between the buildings look like something worth keeping.
