September dusk at the mouth of Topanga Canyon holds the day's heat a long while, oaks going black against a still-orange sky, the west Valley cooling down street by street. Exotic Landscape finishes its rounds in that hour, mowing the broad lawns of Woodland Hills and Winnetka, edging the long curved driveways, running the trimmer around trunks and mailbox posts. Out here the lots are generous, so an even cut and a straight border make a real difference from the road. Hedges get squared, dry leaves raked out from the beds, everything loaded and taken away. The porch light comes on over a yard that is finished, and the evening belongs to the crickets.
