The Santa Ynez River runs low most of the year, a wide bed of sand and willow behind River Park. Then the winter rains arrive and the whole valley answers — the sycamores let go, the hills green almost overnight, and every lawn in Lompoc starts growing again at the same time. Velasquez gardening meets that turn with a mower and a straight line: grass cut on a set schedule, edges cleaned along the sidewalk, close trimming around trunks and posts, leaves and clippings raked up and carried off. Spring in the Lompoc Valley is generous, and it asks for someone willing to keep pace with it. By high summer the pace eases, but the cut goes on. A yard tended all the way through the year looks like it — and that is the whole reward.
