Summer arrives late in Lee Vining and leaves early, so every green thing in town is tended with intent. On a June morning the Sierra crest flushes pink before the sun clears the far side of Mono Lake, and the breeze off the water is cold enough to fog your breath. Mono Works mows, trims, and tidies yards inside that short, brilliant window, at the mouth of Lee Vining Canyon along Highway 395. Grass at nearly seven thousand feet grows in bursts, and holding it to an even height is a small mountain discipline of its own. A freshly mown patch of green set against sagebrush and granite is a welcome sight for anyone coming down off Tioga Pass.
